1 – Breaking Barriers (30 mins activity)

Objective:  Identify and address gender biases in STEAM

Instructions:

  1. Introduction (5 minutes):

Briefly review common gender biases in STEAM, such as stereotypes that men are more suited for technical roles and the resulting effects on women’s confidence and participation.

  1. Case Study Analysis (10 minutes):
  • Divide mentors into small groups.
  • Provide each group a case study depicting a scenario with gender bias (e.g., a female student consistently given less technical tasks).
  • Discuss the impact on the mentee and possible mentor interventions.
  1. Role-Playing Exercise (10 minutes):
  • In pairs, one mentor plays a mentor, the other a mentee experiencing bias.
  • Practice empathetic listening and support; then switch roles.
  1. Practice or Reflection (5 minutes):

Group discussion on strategies to address gender bias in mentoring, emphasising empathy and inclusivity as keys to empowering mentees.

Activities and practical exercises: Subtopic 2: Empowerment and Confidence-Building for Mentees

    • Mentors pair up and practice guiding mentees through reframing negative thoughts.
    • Use affirmations and constructive feedback techniques to help mentees see their strengths and achievements objectively.
  3. Role Model Introduction (10 minutes):
    • Mentors learn how to introduce mentees to inspiring STEAM role models (through videos, articles, or biographies).
    • Discuss how seeing someone with a similar background succeed can reduce self-doubt and inspire confidence.

Practice or Reflection (5 minutes):
Wrap up with a reflection on how these tools can empower mentees, and emphasise the role of mentors in helping mentees recognize their potential and shift their mindset

Activities and practical exercises: Subtopic 3: Engagement and Network Building within the Mentorship Community

3-Strength in Community: Building Peer Support Networks in STEAM (30 mins activity)

Tips & Strategies:

1. Provide Clear Instructions and Objectives

  • Tip: Always start each activity by clearly outlining the purpose and expected outcomes to mentors and mentees.
  • Pitfall: Avoid being vague or overly complex in your instructions. Use simple language and concrete examples.

2. Use Real-Life Examples and Case Studies

  • Tip: Incorporate real-world scenarios or success stories to make activities relatable and impactful.
  • Pitfall: Avoid generic examples that may not resonate with participants. Tailor stories to align with the mentees’ backgrounds and STEAM fields.

3. Create a Safe and Inclusive Environment

  • Tip: Emphasise confidentiality and mutual respect at the start of each activity to encourage open sharing.
  • Pitfall: Avoid dismissing or minimising mentees’ experiences. Mentors should validate feelings and ensure every voice is heard.

4. Incorporate Interactive and Engaging Formats

  • Tip: Use role-plays, group discussions, and peer-to-peer activities to keep participants actively engaged.
  • Pitfall: Avoid overly lecture-heavy sessions, which can reduce participation and enthusiasm. Keep activities dynamic.

5. Provide Tools and Resources for Follow-Up

  • Tip: Offer templates, guides, or frameworks (e.g., self-assessment forms, goal-setting worksheets) that mentors and mentees can use beyond the session.
  • Pitfall: Avoid leaving participants without actionable takeaways. Always provide materials for continued learning.

6. Schedule Regular Check-Ins

  • Tip: Encourage mentors to schedule periodic follow-ups with mentees to assess progress and address challenges.
  • Pitfall: Avoid one-time activities with no continuity. Consistent engagement ensures sustained impact.

7. Focus on Constructive Feedback and Encouragement

  • Tip: Teach mentors to provide specific, actionable, and encouraging feedback that fosters growth and confidence.
  • Pitfall: Avoid overly critical or vague feedback, which can demotivate mentees. Balance constructive criticism with positive reinforcement.

8. Include Role Models and Networking Opportunities

  • Tip: Introduce mentees to role models and peers in STEAM to inspire and normalise success stories.
  • Pitfall: Avoid presenting only high-level achievers. Include diverse role models with relatable journeys.

9. Monitor and Evaluate Progress

  • Tip: Use surveys, reflection journals, or feedback forms to measure the impact of the activities on confidence and career aspirations.
  • Pitfall: Avoid skipping assessments, as this may prevent you from understanding what works and what needs improvement.

10. Prepare Mentors for Potential Challenges

  • Tip: Train mentors to handle sensitive topics, like impostor syndrome or cultural biases, with empathy and professionalism.
  • Pitfall: Avoid neglecting mentor training. Mentors who are unprepared may unintentionally reinforce biases or miss opportunities to support their mentees.

11. Encourage Peer Support Among Mentees

  • Tip: Design activities that promote collaboration and peer learning, such as sharing circles or group projects.
  • Pitfall: Avoid competitive setups that may create division. Foster cooperation and mutual encouragement instead.

12. Tailor Activities to Participants’ Needs

  • Tip: Customize activities based on the mentees’ career stage, cultural context, and STEAM field.

Pitfall: Avoid one-size-fits-all approaches. Personalized activities are more impactful.
