1 – Breaking Barriers (30 mins activity)
Objective: Identify and address gender biases in STEAM
Instructions:
Briefly review common gender biases in STEAM, such as stereotypes that men are more suited for technical roles and the resulting effects on women’s confidence and participation.
Group discussion on strategies to address gender bias in mentoring, emphasising empathy and inclusivity as keys to empowering mentees.
2- Building Confidence: Overcoming Impostor Syndrome and Stereotype Threat in STEAM (30 mins activity)
Objective: equip mentors with tools to help mentees overcome impostor syndrome and stereotype threat, fostering confidence and resilience in their STEAM journeys.
Instructions:
Practice or Reflection (5 minutes):
Wrap up with a reflection on how these tools can empower mentees, and emphasise the role of mentors in helping mentees recognize their potential and shift their mindset
3-Strength in Community: Building Peer Support Networks in STEAM (30 mins activity)
Objective: Create a supportive environment where mentees can share experiences, challenges, and successes, fostering mutual learning and encouragement within the STEAM community.
Instructions:
4- Tracking Growth: Assessing Confidence and Career Progress in STEAM Mentorship (30 mins activity)
Objective: To help mentors evaluate the impact of mentorship on mentees’ self-esteem, confidence, and career aspirations, ensuring that gender-specific goals are being met and mentees feel supported in their STEAM journey.
