Let’s hear from Fab Lab León and their work in empowering girls in technology

At Fab Lab León, we are proud to be part of initiatives that promote inclusion and gender equality in the technology field. The Fab Connect Her project aligns perfectly with our mission to foster scientific and technological vocations. Our work in this area starts from an early age through programmes like Poderosas – Fab Lab León (fablableon.org)

How Did Poderosas Start?

The Poderosas programme was inspired by Luz Rivas, an engineer from Los Angeles and MIT alumna, who founded this initiative to bring technology closer to Latina girls and women. In 2013, we discovered this wonderful initiative and decided to adopt it at our Fab Lab León to expand its impact in Spain.

Our Teaching Methodology at Fab Lab León

Our methodology is based on the “learning by doing” approach, which we have found to be the most effective way of learning. Here’s more about how we implement this methodology in our educational programs.

  • Learning by Doing

We believe that practical experience is key to learning. Therefore, we propose attractive projects that the girls need to complete using the tools available at Fab Lab León, always with the support of our instructors. This approach helps them better understand and retain the knowledge they acquire.

  • Making Mistakes

We encourage our students’ autonomy, which inevitably leads to mistakes. However, we see mistakes as learning opportunities. By identifying and solving errors, the girls better understand how things work and develop valuable skills for their daily lives.

  • Understanding the Purpose of Learning

By working on concrete projects that can be completed in a short time, the girls quickly see the results of their efforts and understand the practical application of the programming, 3D printing, robotics, design, or electronics knowledge they acquire. This contrasts with traditional education, where the practical utility of learning is often not immediately visible.

  • Having Fun

Motivation and enjoyment are fundamental in our approach. We propose projects that the girls can personalize according to their tastes, which increases their engagement and enjoyment.

  • Taking Home Their Creations

Every day, our students take home the projects they have created. From 3D bookmarks to keychains, these tangible achievements reinforce their pride and knowledge, allowing them to share and explain what they have done.

  • Want to Learn More

Fab Lab León is a space of infinite possibilities. One project always leads to new ideas, fostering creativity and curiosity in our students, who are always eager to learn more.

  • Understanding That Technology Is for Everyone

Regardless of what they want to be in the future, here they understand the potential of technology for any profession, whether they want to be writers, artists, or fashion designers. At Fab Lab León, we instill the idea that anyone can use technology to create new ideas.

The Impact of Fab Connect Her and Poderosas

The Fab Connect Her project allows us to expand our impact by connecting with European partners and bringing our methodology to a broader audience. In 2022, we successfully concluded our first European project, Shemakes, which focused on reducing the gender gap in the textile sector from an early age. This project, funded by the European Commission, allowed us to perfect our knowledge and strengthen our relationships with international partners.

With programmes like Poderosas, we continue to work to inspire girls and young women to pursue careers in science and technology, demonstrating that technology is a powerful tool for creativity and innovation.

At Fab Lab León, we are committed to inclusive education and creating opportunities for everyone.

Our Work at FabConnectHer

Fab Lab León, together with Learning Hub Friesland, are developing Work Package 3: MentHer, a network of mentors and STEM professionals that will mentor girls and young women offering them guidance and support in STEM fields.
