Blog 3 – Team C: Designing With Meaning, Making With Purpose

Team C approached the FabConnectHer STEAM Challenge with focus and intention. Their concept evolved from questions about identity, memory and the way traditions can inspire modern design.

The week began with learning Irish heritage through crafting Crios Belts, followed by the STEAM role-model card challenge. This simple activity quickly opened conversations about the paths of women in STEAM and how visibility shapes aspiration. These reflections guided their creative direction: a prototype that honours women’s contributions across time.

During the ideation phase, Team C filled their workspace with sketches, geometric forms and cultural motifs. Each student contributed a story or symbol from home, and the team worked together to blend them into a cohesive design.

Energy shifted on Wednesday during the visit to Newgrange and the Battle of the Boyne site. The sense of standing in front of structures that have survived for millennia pushed the team to refine their work with even more purpose.

That afternoon became a true maker sprint. With 3D printers humming and laser cutters cutting intricate patterns, Team C translated their ideas into physical form. Their mentoring session that evening helped them reflect on the confidence gained through trying new tools and relying on each other.

On pitch day, the team added the final elements and rehearsed with clarity. Their presentation highlighted the symbolism behind each design choice and the way cultural histories influenced their prototype. The judges praised their thoughtful storytelling.
