Empathy Mapping

Introduction

A visual tool to explore a person’s emotions, thoughts, words, and actions during an experience. It fosters deeper emotional connections and builds trust.

Objective/Description

Empathy Mapping is a visualization exercise that helps mentors connect with their mentee’s emotions and perspectives on a deeper level. Mentors create an “Empathy Map” based on something the mentee shares, mapping out what the mentee might be feeling, thinking, saying, and doing in that situation. This helps mentors develop a stronger emotional connection to the mentee’s experiences.

Steps/Process

  1. Listen to a Story or Challenge: Ask the mentee to share a recent experience, whether it’s a challenge, success, or a day-to-day situation.
  2. Create an Empathy Map: As the mentee speaks, the mentor mentally or visually fills out an empathy map, considering:
    • Feel: What emotions is the mentee likely feeling?
    • Think: What thoughts might they have in this situation?
    • Say: What words or phrases are they expressing?
    • Do: What actions or body language are they showing?
  3. Reflect Back Empathy: Once the mentee finishes, the mentor reflects back insights from the empathy map to validate the mentee’s experience. For example:
    • “I sense that you felt [emotion] when that happened.”
    • “It sounds like you were thinking about [thought] in that moment.”
  4. Check for Understanding: To make sure the mentor’s empathy mapping is accurate, they can gently ask the mentee, “Did I understand that correctly?” or “Is there more you’d like to share about that?”

Conclusion/Outcome

This activity sharpens the mentor’s ability to empathize with the mentee’s unspoken emotions and thoughts, creating a safe and supportive environment. It encourages the mentee to feel fully understood, which strengthens trust and connection in the mentorship relationship.
