Lowering the threshold: getting girls in the door

At The Code Lab, they introduced girls-only, low-pressure workshops to encourage girls to take a first step into coding. They also actively involved parents and schools to support and encourage participation.

    • What have you done in your context to encourage girls to take a first step into STEAM?
    • What role do parents and schools play in your experience?

Really looking forward to hearing how today went. NL’s spotlight in girls in this context is brilliant and would be great to learn from the approach

We used Girls Day (organised by VHTO in the Netherlands) as a way to get girls into the FabLab. A local school brought 8 girls to the D’Lab, where they could try out simple, hands-on activities like making stickers, earrings and keychains. The low-pressure, creative setup worked well to get them through the door.

What we noticed is that their starting points really differed. One girl was already very experienced and knew she wanted to go into aircraft engineering, while others were just exploring or less interested. Even so, working together with schools made it easy to reach them and get them to join, but it also means you naturally get girls who are less motivated or feel like they just have to be there.

Curious to hear from others: how do you get girls to take that first step, and how do you deal with different levels of interest from the start?
